According to the World Intellectual Property Organization’s Global Innovation Index 2020, Beijing ranks fourth in the global technology cluster. The first manuscript on the page reported that Beijing attaches great importance to technological innovation and development, and its R&D strength is leading the country in many fields. Last year, Beijing’s R&D expenditure reached 223.36 billion yuan (33.97 billion US dollars), accounting for 6.31% of the city’s GDP.In the same year, the number of state-level high-tech enterprises in the city exceeded 27,000, an increase of approximately 56% compared to 2016.
As of the end of 2019, Beijing has more than 560 foreign research institutions including Microsoft Research Asia and Toshiba R&D Center, and has launched multiple multinational projects in Beijing such as Intel Open Innovation Center and China-Italy Innovation Center.Statistics show that in 2019, the added value of high-tech enterprises accounted for about 24% of the city's GDP.Professor Liang Zheng, a professor with the School of Public Policy and Management at Tsinghua University believes that the index pays special attention to the cutting-edge and leading of innovation, such as patent applications and cooperation network information in the field of artificial intelligence. The number of innovative companies and unicorn companies in emerging industries such as communications and biomedicine.Liang Zheng added that this can more accurately reflect the growth space and development potential of the science and technology innovation center in the future.
